Class Notes – Aug 9, 2016 – Long Blade AK

Instructing: Guro Joe C & Guro Lem

Attendence: Brian, Dan, Dinno, and Vince

Notes:

Tonight we worked on long blade material from Atienza Kali. First we did some triangle and hourglass footwork. Then, we worked off the second count of the bolo evo 1. We used footwork to move out of the attack. Then we used passes along with the footwork. Next we worked on two-counting the attack. All these moves we tried to emphasize moving to the side or even to the back of the attacker. This made sure the attacker would be off balance from trying another attack. If the attacker would swing back (count 3), we would be ready with a tip-up deflection.

Class Notes – July 12, 2016 – Long Weapon Entry

Instructing: Guro Joe C, Guro Joe M, and Guro Lem

Attendance: Dan, Alex, Asim, Dinno, Mike, and Vince

Notes:

Tonight’s class we started with hour glass footwork from Atienza Kali. We worked the bottom half of the hour glass from top of the triangle to the bottom corner. Then we worked moving up the hour glass from the bottom of the corners to the top.

We had the Feeder 1 slash angle one and two. Feeder 2 steps either side to just be out of Feeder 1’s slashes. We later circled past Feeder’s slashes to get behind him for a counter attack. We then added tip-down deflections to the footwork. After working the footwork and tip-down’s, we added a counter to Feeder 1’s slashes.

Class Notes – June 7, 2016 – Atienza Kali Long Blade Tip Down Deflections; Knife against Long Weapon

Attendence: Brian, Dan, Lance, Lance’s buddy/cousin(whose name I forget), Sid, Dino and Vince from Vedo’s group, and  new guy dropped in named Justin
Notes:
We warmed up with some stick movement akin to shadow boxing. Dan brought enough padded sticks for everybody which was great to have.
We started on foot work for an angle 1 natural deflection (2 count).  Then we worked on slipping the angle 1 strike without a sword. This was done in order to focus on the footwork, timing, and correct body positioning. Later, we added another attack from the Feeder with the sword and countered it. We focused heavily on the footwork and continued on to a proto RCE drill where they just blocked everything but the angle 1 where they took their counter.  This further amplified the need to move with the foot work. 2016-06-13-21-58-102016-06-13-22-04-51
We finished with a knife application against a long weapon.  Same footwork and same angle etc.  The short blade made the footwork more explosive and urgent.

Class Notes – April 5, 2016 – Atienza Kali – Deflections with a Two Count

Instructing:  Guro Joe M, Guro Joe C, and Guro Lem

Attendance:  Alex, Sid, Dan, and Asim

Notes:

We started class with AK hourglass footwork. After practicing some triangle footwork, we added slashes to the drill. Later, we started working tip-up and tip-down deflections. We had them work that on both sides and later counter with a two-count. After they had some reps in those, we added tip-up passes with two-count. Next we had them switch out their trainers with soft sticks to get some hits.

Class Notes – March 1, 2016 – Atienza Kali – Intercepts

Instructing: Guro’s Joe C & Lem

Attending: Brian, Asim, Ryan, James, and Lance

Notes:

Tonight we warmed up with the hourglass footwork with slashes, tip-up and tip-down deflections. Next, we compared short slashes and long slashes. We had them partner up and practice their short slashes. In this exercise, we had their partner hold out their stick and try to retract the stick while the other tried hitting it with short slashes. 2016-03-04-09-30-40

From there, we had them track the forehand anchor point and perform short slashes whenever they saw it in a flow. Finally, we had them partner up and made feeder 1 attack feeder 2 with different angles. Feeder 2 would counter everything with tip-up/tip-down deflections and intercept that forehand long slash when they saw it.

Class Notes – Feb 2, 2016 – Atienza Kali Long Blade

Instructing: Guro Joe M, Guro Joe C, and Guro Lem

Attendance: Lance, James, Dan, and Sid

Notes:

We practiced an hour glass footwork for this class. This footwork utilizes the male and triangle footwork. It can work with the upper body swinging the blade or using jab and cross. We later worked on the first six counts of sword evo 1. Most of these counters used the point up or point down deflections. Changed sides to get both sides to feed.

Class Notes – Jan 5, 2016 – Long Blade, Atienza Kali

Instructing: Guro Joe M, Guro Joe C, and Guro Lem

Attending: Lance, James, Dan, and Brian

Notes:

Welcoming the new year with some long blade drills. First, we worked on footwork showing a male triangle drill.  Next we showed a downward deflection on the right side to a two count hit; stepping to the left of the triangle at the same time. We followed that up with forcing an anchor to initiate feeder 2 reaction.
