Class Notes – April 10, 2018 – 3 of 9 Hit sets with Throw

Attending:

Guros Joe C. & Lem, Bryan, Ryan, Dan, and Andrew

Notes:

Tonight’s class we split the guys in two groups. We had the senior students take turns teaching 3 of 9 to our new student. While they were teaching, we went through some of the hit sets from 3 of 9. Most of these techniques were just review for some. So we tried a throw a receiver might do on one of the hit set counts. We came up with a nice single leg for count 5. We would perform the hit set for count 5 and go into the single leg. We didn’t like staying in that position of holding the single leg for too long. So we concentrated throwing the Feeder to the ground right away. Some techniques that seemed to work for us was a good shoulder bump, sweep the posting leg, or if those failed we’d just throw the blade arm/leg away. Some techniques worked better on some people because of height/length of leg. Others used a different technique to get it done. Here are some pictures of class that night.

Class – April 4, 2017 – Sayoc Stick Grappling

Instructors: Guro Joe C and Guro Lem

Attendees: Dan, Brian, and Ryan

Notes:

We continued with the stick grappling techniques from last week. These techniques are from Tuhon Tom’s stick grapping instructions in the past. We reviewed the stand up body lock to chokes with the stick. We went through some front head locks to guillotine chokes. Next, we transitioned from the side body lock to head and arm throw or to the neck crush. And also, we worked on some over-under clinch techniques to finishes.

We got some good reps drilling these sequences. We made them lightly free-flow through the locks from the side body clinch. From there, we had the Receiver’s give some reaction to which the Feeder’s had to move into the correct lock or choke or throw.

Next stick class we will review take downs with finishes. Also, maybe we will learn how to initiate a response to get entry.

Class Notes – May 25, 2010

I almost forgot my anniversary this year! Luckily, Aaron stepped up and took over the class in my absence.

Attendees: Ryan, Brian, Frank & Aaron

First part of the class we worked triangle/hourglass footwork with and without striking & short blades. The remainder of the class was free flow. Frank and I worked with Ryan and Brain each during this time. We practiced single/double blade, drawing, striping, some panuntukan, grappling, footwork and “what if” scenario’s. Fun, fun, fun!

Oh, HAPPY ANNIVERSARY! from everyone who attended class tonight!

Aaron

Sama Sama 2009 (July 3 – 6, 2009)

We had a great turnout from Maharlika Martial Arts this year! Guro Lem, and Kapatids Joe and Miguel underwent recertification and testing. Mosi, Aaron and William attended Sama Sama for the first time.

I heard a lot of compliments from different instructors about how well the Maryland crew performed in the stick fights. Aaron, in particular, was a monster in his late night, no armor stickfight, ultimately submitting his opponent with a rear naked choke!

New rankings are as follows:

  • Bob Shin – Full Instructor Level 1
  • Lem Tasin – Associate Instructor Level 3
  • Miguel Acevedo – Apprentice Instructor Level 3
  • Joe Cypressi – Apprentice Instructor Level 3

Congratulations everyone, and I hope to see everyone next year at Sama Sama 2010!
