Class Notes – September 21, 2010

It was “back-to-school” night for me, so Joe C. ran class …

Attendance: me, Dave, Brian, Mosi, Ryan, Lauris, Roderick, Will, Bryant

Class went well. We started off reviewing 3 of 9 Left and Right, right hand leads and then tapping as a warm up and assessment period.

The two newest students (Will and Bryant) continued to work on 3 of 9 Right and left while the rest explored free flow for the receiver’s benefit. We started off with the feeder going light and slow enough to garner repeatable correct responses from the receiver. We drilled at a pace that only allowed for the occasional cut for about 20 mins. Feeders were encouraged NOT to get carried away and put too much pressure on the receiver too soon and draw incorrect responses. Eventually the pressure was increased to get cuts more often but still less than 3/4 speed. Emphasis was placed on the importance of a solid phase one foundation before training phase two.

The rest learned TD1 stop locks through 6.Ended class with review of the one-for-one principle and the live blade mentality as they apply to the drills.

Class Notes – November 3, 2009

In attendance: Joe C. (instructing), Mosi, Aaron, Frank, David, Brian, Mark, Martin and Tre.

Tuesday went well, I reviewed 3 of 9 right with the newer guys while the more expierenced guys reviewed Tuhon Carl’s mass attack stuff from the seminar. Chris said he had a good time at the AK seminar btw. Then we installed 3 of 9 left with the new guys and then had the advanced group demo and partner with the newer guys for right and left together. Once everyone had the idea I explained all the different permutations of mixing that together and that they could be practiced at home without a partner. Then we moved onto left defeats right in 3 move increments. We then reviewed 3 of 9 with tapping and the advanced guys demo’d true left. Upon the blond 5 minute alarm going off we ended with a brief discussion of the potential depth of the drills and their function as a skeleton to hang other techniques on. Mosi then demoed the shock entries off of 3 of 9 and I demoed the running line drill with the skating footwork.
